If You Missed the Last Meeting... by Mike Hayes
click to print this pageprint this page

If you missed the meeting on February 8, 2012, you missed a wonderful presentation by Air Force Major Damon Brown, a former 7:10er, about his experiences the last six months in Iraq. We owe Damon, and thousands of others, our sincerest gratitude for their service there.  Next week our speaker will be Phil Washington, General Manager of RTD on FasTracks.

President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  Bob offered a prayer. Belatedly, Angela asked Secretary Robert to introduce guests including George Maybee, Mac Cummins and Chuck Hensel.

JP then led us in the ceremony inducting Shaun Poe.  Welcome Shaun.  We look forward to getting to know you.

Announcements:

  • Angela informed us that the board has approved the criteria for our Youth in Action Award and that rather than a plaque we will give cash to the recipient. Give your nominations to Brian.
  • Brian updated us on the GSE team coming from Croatia in April. A tentative schedule has been prepared and submitted to the district. We need host families. Let him know of your interest.
  • Brian reported on Flower Power Plans. We will be delivering flowers to four homes for seniors. Let him know if you would like to help.
  • Rick announced we have 54 signed up for the Wine Stomp. He does not know how many days until Water World opens.
  • Angela announced the club will reimburse those who attend the Future Vision Seminar on March 17. So far Angela, Rick, Loren and Mike plan to attend.
  • Mike reported on progress with the Imagination Library program. He has received encouragement from the Daniels Fund that they may generously support it. Let Mike know if you would like to work on developing plans to move the program forward.
  • John reported on the Dictionary distribution. Let him know when you have presented.
  • Lynn asked for help in getting the club's display for the House of Friendship to the District Conference.
  • Bob and Herb urged us to attend and bring guests next week for the presentation on FasTracks. Let Herb know if you didn't get his email on RTD Changes for the US36 corridor.

We had a surprise SatA this morning: none other than President Angela who subbed for Doug.  She claimed she was nervous, but it sure didn't seem like it as she collected big bucks from those who don't know enough about Rotary.

Joe offered a really profound thought.

Mike's Rotary Moment reported that the District PR committee would like to hear about non-Rotarians who have seen the Rotary displays at DIA or who report having heard about Rotary on public radio.  Give Mike any comments you hear.

Although Emily could not attend this a.m., Angela reminded us that Emily was featured in the Family of Rotary column in the Bemis award winning, Frameable, Winter Edition of the  EarlyWord newsletter (which was on the tables and can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/

We closed with a recitation of the Four Way Test.

Cheers, Mike

If you missed the meeting on February 1st, 2012, you didn't miss our scheduled speaker, who had to cancel, but you did miss lots of good stuff.  As President Angela said, it was almost like another Club Assembly.  Next week Damon Brown will present a program about his recent deployment to Iraq.

.

President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  Barbara provided a very meaningful inspiration.  Secretary Robert cancelled birthdays as we did such a terrible job singing Happy Birthday last week.  He also introduced Jessica Goette, a member of the GSE team going to Brazil and Kelly Berry, from Up With People.

Announcements:

  • Brian reminded us that we are committed to hosting a GSE team from Croatia in April. He needs a committee to help plan their stay and also needs host families. They will be here April 17-20.
  • Brian and some others met with the principal of Mountain Range High School and discussed ways we could work with them including RYLA, the Four Way Test and Interact.
  • Barbara circulated a letter from the Boulder Dinner Theater, inviting us to bring a group. Anyone interested in arranging this?
  • She then told us about the Interactors from the Global Leadership Academy working last Saturday on a Habitat for Humanity house. These are some great kids.
  • JP announced we will be inducting Shaun Poe next week and we have three other prospects.
  • Loren circulated a thank you letter from the Boulder Valley Rotary club for the six laptops we donated to Think Humanity in Uganda.
  • Lee announced a breakfast Saturday a.m. sponsored by the Westminster Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association at Quaker Stead and Lube., 10392 Reed Street, Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.. This event is to help raise funds for the Santa Cops program where we partner with Social Service agencies & identify needy families who won't likely have much of a Christmas. Cops deliver gifts to the kids & food to the families for a Christmas meal. Tickets are $10. For tickets contact: Cathy Germann @ cathygermann@comcast.net or buy them at the door. Bring the children and have their picture taken on a motorcycle.
  • Doug announced the opportunity to review the artwork for the public safety art and also announced that bricks to support the art can be purchased from him or Lee. Deadline is March 1st.
  • Lynn announced that he and Bob will be manning the Rotary booth at the Garden and Home show on February 19th, and would like to have some company. He also informed us he had visited the Ameristar Hotel, the site of the forthcoming District Conference. It is a great facility and he urged members to attend the conference.
  • Roberta announced that plans are underway to start a Rotaract club in Westminster. Rotaract clubs provide young men and women, ages 18-30, with the opportunity to serve and enjoy fellowship just as regular Rotary clubs do, but without the requirement for weekly meetings. She needs help in getting this going.
  • Martin introduced Jessica Goette, who will be a member of the GSE team going to Brazil later this year. She is excited about the opportunity.
  • Bill asked us to think about possible speakers for the Armed Forces day event at the Tribute Garden. He would like to have speakers who "have served in the trenches."
  • John advised Doug that his garage is no longer a fire hazard as all dictionaries have been delivered to 24 schools. He passed out assignment sheets and asked us to start arranging for presentations.
  • Rick announced that this Friday is the last day to sign up for the Wine Stomp.
  • Angela announced there is a board meeting Friday, February 3rd at 7:00 a.m. All are welcome.

Brian introduced Kelly Berry who is the International Promotion Representative for Up With People.  She gave us a brief overview of the history and current status of Up With People.  They currently have 106 young people from 23 countries in the program.  She urged us to attend one of their two concerts at the Performing Arts Complex and Pinnacle Charter School.  February 3rd and 4th at 7:30 p.m.

Doug not only extracted big bucks but also got extra bucks from Joe T. who confessed to 53 years with Liz and from Dana who confessed to 21 years with Denise.  Congratulations to both.

Mike's Rotary moment advised the club that Rotary's Polio eradication story was featured in the January 21st issue of the Economist.  Great to get the recognition.  He also urged members to attend the Future Vision Seminar on March 17th.

Joe T. offered some profound, and little known, history about Creeks.

Angela thanked Dana, who was featured in the Family of Rotary section of the Bemis award winning, Frameable, Winter edition of the Early Word newsletter, copies of which were on the tables and can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/

We closed a few minutes early with an uplifting rendition of the Four Way Test.

Cheers. Mike

If you missed the meeting on January 25th, 2012, you missed a great review of what is going on in the club.  Details below.  Next week's program will be Young Life by Tricia Rilling.

President Angela presided.  Bill led us in the pledge and Herb offered an inspiration. Robert introduced guest Paula Stud and visiting Rotarians Dave Talbot and George Maybee.  We sang (I use the word loosely, mumbled might be better) Happy Birthday to Bagman Kevin.

Angela announced the District Conference in Blackhawk, April 27-29, and strongly encouraged us to attend.

She then introduced Dave Talbot who thanked us for our support of Crutches for Africa, told us of the need for a wheel chair, and invited us to attend a fundraiser at the Mt. Vernon Country Club.  February 4 from noon to 3 p.m.  It's a Cabin Fever Chili Cook-Off.

Club Assembly:

The Assembly followed the outline of the results of our Visioning Session with reports as follows:

  • JP reported on our Membership goals and plans to achieve them. Hopefully 50 members by 2016.
  • Rick reported on fund raising. Three major events. The Wine Stomp, February 10, the Bocce tournament, May 19, and, of course, peaches next summer.
  • Bryan reported on Service Projects. We will host a GSE team from Croatia in April. Applications will be accepted for RYLA and YRYLA from February 15 to April 30. We will be looking for more ways to work with Roger's Rangers.
  • Lynn reported on Publicity efforts at the District level (including banners at DIA, sponsor announcements on Public Radio, and a booth at the Garden and Home Show). Plus we will continue to publicize club events.
  • Rick reminded us that we secured support ($3,000) for C4K using funds from the pool for District Simplified Grants. Think about new projects for which we could apply for another Grant. We would need to do this by July 1.
  • Brian reported on a new award: Youth in Action. He has the criteria and will accept nominations for at least a few more weeks.
  • Barbara reported on the success of the Interact club at Mapleton.
  • Roberta reported on her attendance at the Rotary Foundation Seminar on January 14. Big changes coming, which will be the subject of a seminar on March 17. Plus, the district is helping to identify alumni of the Foundation who should be prospective members.
  • Loren reported on the Club Foundation, its recent decisions and the amount in the corpus, $21,711.07.
  • Rick announced a new program to encourage members to add to their contributions to the Club's Foundation. Details shortly.
  • Doug will be recommending possible candidates for Awards to be made at the District Conference. He is looking for volunteers to serve as SatA the rest of this quarter. Our programs are booked through March, but he is looking for suggestions for the fourth quarter.
  • Mike asked for more volunteers for dictionary presentations. These will be made in February. Let him know if you haven't signed up.

Doug then proceeded with a very successful (although not necessarily fair) extraction.

Mike's Rotary moment announced that has for RI President-elect Tanaka established "Peace Through Service" as our theme 2012-2013.  He has written an extensive article about this.  Let Mike know if you would like a copy.

Joe offered a series of profound thoughts about the "good old days."

George Maybee from the Commerce City club asked us to consider donating books to their First Nations Library Project in British Columbia and to provide a wide array of materials to provide English teaching assistance for schools in Mongolia.  These items are needed for an April 2012 container out of Seattle.  Call George for more information at 303-655-9831 or email him at gkmaybee@aol.com

Angela recognized Bill who was featured in the Family of Rotary section of the Early Word (copies were on the tables and can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/.  Then, Herb informed us that Bill is going to retire from his position as Director of the City's Parks, Recreation and Library Department on April 2.  The club gave him a standing ovation in recognition of his great leadership.

Hope this captures most of what went on.

Cheers, Mike

If you missed the meeting on January 18th, 2012, you missed a most informative presentation by Pat Landrum on Social Venture Partners and the Denver Foundation, two organizations with whom we could surely work. Bruce Jones, our great friend from Seattle, introduced Pat. Next week we will have a Club Assembly at which time we will learn all about what is going on in the club.

President-elect Rick presided. Don (featured in the family of Rotary) led us in the pledge. Loren offered an inspiration. Robert led us in singing Happy Birthday to Marvelous Martin.

Announcements:

  • Mark W. announced the opportunity to visit Nicaragua with members of the Boulder Club to see first hand some of the work being done there. March 21-25. Call Mark for details.
  • Rick reminded us of the Wine Stomp, February 10. Deadline for signing up is February1.
  • Lynn informed us about some of the publicity for Rotary by the Rotary Awareness committee. We now have banners at DIA, we have spots on Colorado Public Radio, and the district will have a booth at the Colorado Garden and Home Show from February 11-19. Let Lynn know if you would like to help man the booth. Also let him know if you would like to attend a district Rotary Awareness meeting.
  • Mike (subbing for John) gave an update on dictionaries and circulated a sign up sheet to make presentations to the schools. Let John know if you haven't signed up. jinman@inmanwater.com. Also let him know if you have a preference for certain schools.
  • Brian reminded us that he needs help picking up flowers at the Garden and Home Show on February 19. This also would be an opportunity to man the Rotary booth. Let him know at bhall@valleybankandtrust.com. He also asked for nominations for our Youth in Action award.
  • Rick announced that India has now gone for a year without a single case of Polio. But Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are still challenging.

Doug substituted as SatA and collected big bucks despite his unawareness of his support of the club's Foundation.

Mike's Rotary Moment congratulated the club on having achieved its goal of $7,000 in giving to Polio and announced that on January 17 Rotarians around the world met their goal of contributing $200 million to match the Gates Foundation Challenge Grant. But there is still much to do.

Rick shared a profound thought and congratulated Don (again featured in the Family of Rotary).

We closed with a recitation of the Four Way Test. Rick promised that next week the Four Way Test banner will be turned around and that our memories will be tested.

Copies of the Bemis award winning, frameable, Winter edition,  EarlyWord newsletter were carefully placed on each of  the tables and can be accessed by visiting the 7:10 Rotary Club web site or clicking here

Cheers. Mike

If you missed the meeting on January 11, 2012, you missed a great presentation on the status of higher education in Colorado (plus quite a bit on K-12) by Lt. Governor Joe Garcia who is also Executive Director of the Department of Higher Education. Bob arranged the program and the Lt. Governor was introduced by Hereford Percy, Chairman of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. Next week's program will feature Social Venture Partners, a program arranged by Bruce Jones.

President Angela presided and led us in the pledge. Bob offered a prayer. Secretary Robert announced there were no birthdays and then asked members to introduce their many guests.

Shari Nelson, Community Manager for the local Your Hub newspaper, made a brief presentation on their plans for more community involvement and encouraged members to submit stories about the club's activities.

Announcements:

  • Mike invited members to attend a presentation by Bob Briggs and Ron Hellbusch on "Westminster's Water Wars" January 25 at the Denver Posse for Westerners at the Park Hill Golf Clubhouse. Cost is $23. Let Mike know if you would like to sign up.
  • Bryan announced he is looking for nominations for the Youth in Action Award (as identified in our Visioning plan). Deadline is February 1. He also announced the opportunity to participate in Flower Power, to pick up flowers from the Home and Garden Show and deliver them to seniors or shut-ins. February 19 and 20. Herb, Rick, John and Roberta volunteered.
  • Rick circulated a sign up sheet for the Wine Stomp, February 10. If you haven't signed up RSVP to Joe at joe@taibuild.com He also invited us to attend a free concert by the North Metro Arts Alliance on January 21. Get more details from Rick.
  • Bob invited us to breakfast with the District 50 Education Foundation on Friday, February 17. Let him know.
  • John needs help this Saturday to repack dictionaries and deliver them to schools. His house, 9960 Yates, at 9:00 a.m. It will help to have large vehicles to use in deliveries.
  • Angela reminded us we have a table for the Foundation Dinner this Friday. Let her know if you would like to carpool. Also, she announced a Rotary Leadership Institute on February 4. A great way to learn more about Rotary. Call her for details.
  • Loren announced a club Foundation board meeting this Friday, 7:00 a.m. at Legacy.
  • Angela then thanked Dale, featured in the Family of Rotary column, for all his support of the club and asked us to join her in thanking him.

JP stepped up to the plate again as SatA. The bucket could not be found so Martin's hat substituted. After reveling in Oregon's Rose Bowl win, JP then conducted an extortion based on extensive research on idiosyncrasies of our members.

Mike's Rotary Moment informed the club that in 1944 RI solicited interest from 37 cities to bid to become home to the headquarters of RI. Denver became the leading contender but at the RI convention in 1946 members defeated the proposal to move to Denver, 1,815 to 1,359. In 1955 headquarters moved from a temporary facility in Chicago to Evanston.

Joe T. offered a humorous thought for the day.

Copies of the award winning Early Word were on the tables. Get your copy at westminster710rotary.org/Newsletter.cfm

We closed with a recitation of the Four Way Test.

Cheers. Mike

If you missed the meeting on January 4th, 2012, you missed a very interesting program about the Colorado Legislative process which begins next week. Our guests were Cheryln Peniston and Robert Ramirez who presented aspects of legislative activity and answered a number of questions about how the education budget works.

Next week the program will be a look at Higher Education in Colorado by Hereford Percy and

Joe Garcia.

More:

President Angela opened the meeting with a rousing snap on the bell right on time. Family of Rotary for this week, Joe T., led the club in the Pledge. And, as usual, Barbara, gave a very meaningful inspiration to get the meeting started.

Secretary Robert introduced our guests, Cheryln, Robert, and Brian Vander Kroll. There were no birthdays this week.

Announcements:

Doug introduced the club to Shen Yun. This is an activity coming to the Buell Theatre on February 22nd and 23rd. Please call him if you are interested in going.

Rick reminded everyone at the meeting that the Wine Stomp is scheduled for February 10th. Cost will be $35 per person. Get your reservations to Rick ASAP. More info later.

Rick also thanked President Angela and her family for the wonderful Family of Rotary open house she hosted last week. Over 30 Rotarians and guests attended. For a closer look at the festivities click here to see the Photo Album on the club web site.

Kevin reiterated his goal to get lots of cloths, canned goods, etc., for the Have A Heart program. He will pickup your donations on Jan. 25th. Bring lots of good stuff to help a great cause.

Angela announced the monthly board meeting coming this Friday, Jan.6th, at 7:00-8:30 am at The Grill at Legacy Ridge Golf Course.

She also reminded the club that the Quad District RI Foundation Dinner and Seminar will be held on Jan. 13th and 14th. We already have 10 people signed up. No Host Cocktails start at 5:30 pm with dinner at 6:30 pm. Traffic is terrible at that time of night so leave Westminster no later than 4:30 to get there by 6:00.

After the program, Doug jumped in as Sgt. at Arms and extracted a few bucks by pitting one half of the room against the other. He offered up questions about the history of Westminster, and where our legislators were born. Bob, of course, being the smartest Rotarian in the room, offered many correct answers. Naturally everyone maxed out. It was a fun filled session.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Darlee this week. Mike was absent this morning to care for her while she recuperates from hip surgery.

Doug also made a plea for Rotarians to step up and take a week or two or more to be a Sgt. At Arms. Please call Doug if you would like to fill in this spot. Otherwise, we will have to listen to Doug the rest of the quarter.

And continuing:

Angela thanked our Family of Rotary member, Joe T. for the great job he has done for the 7:10 club. Joe then had the Thought for the Day: What the Bible means:

                                                Basic Information Before Leaving Earth

Of course, the Bemis award winning, frameable, Winter edition of the EarlyWord newsletter were strategically place on each table. It can also be found by clicking here. This will take you directly to this issue of the EarlyWord. So, while you are there, please take a moment to look around the web site.

After all the frivolity, President Angela again thanked our speakers then asked everyone to stand and recite the Four Way Test, which was done with aplomb.

Cheers,  Mike     /ld

If you missed today's meeting on Dec. 28th, 2011 (and many did) we had a most interesting presentation on Graffiti by Gary Pedigo, Neighborhood Services Specialist for the Westminster Police Department.  Call 303-706-3333 to report Graffiti.  Next week our speakers will be two members of the Colorado House of Representatives who will give us their perspective on the forthcoming legislative session.

President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  Herb provided an inspiration.  Robert introduced Gary Pedigo (who was more formally introduced by Doug) and complained there were no birthdays  for which he blamed Rick.

Several Announcements:

 ·     The Family of Rotary evening will be at the Habben home, Friday, December 30th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Call Angela if you haven't signed up.

  • It was made public that there were no copies of the Early Word this week. Something to do with a trip by the Editarian being out of town.
  • We have a full table for the Foundation Dinner on January 13th. Contact Angela if you want details on how to sign up for the Foundation Seminar on the 14th.
  • Mike informed the club that there will be a most important seminar to provide information on the Future Vision Plan, which will introduce major changes in how The Rotary Foundation works. Save March 17. We need to have several attend.
  • In addition to announcing next week's program, Bob also informed us that our speaker on January 11 will be Lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia on the subject of higher education in Colorado.
  • John announced he has ordered over 1,700 dictionaries, which should arrive in early January. He will need help in repacking them for delivery to the schools (about 25) and then will need help in making presentations.
  • Not publicly announced, but you should know the club's board will meet on January 6th and the foundation board will meet on January 13th.

After neglecting us for several weeks, JP was with us to resume his final duties as SatA.  Before launching into his reign of terror he strongly supported Gary's presentation on Graffiti and the efforts to control it.  He then did everything he could to offend anyone not from the University of Oregon, a university that has not won a Rose Bowl game for an eternity.

Mike's Rotary Moment provided the history of fining in Rotary clubs which started in the first Rotary club.  He also advertised the Denver club's history book, commemorating its 100th birthday.

Joe T. provided profound thoughts.

We experienced withdrawal symptoms as the Bemis award winning, frameable, Winter edition of the EarlyWord newsletter was not on the tables. However, you can peruse previous issues by visiting the 7:10 Club website  by clicking here. Happy reading. The next fact filled issue will be profusly spread on each table on January 4th.

We closed with the Four Way Test.

Happy New Year.

If you missed the meeting on December 21st, you missed a most interesting presentation by Ted Ning, Founder, and Travis Ning, Executive Director, of Starfish One by One, a program to provide scholarships to underprivileged women in Guatemala.  Considerable interest was expressed in visiting Guatemala to see the project first hand and we may be able to combine this with a visit to Friendship Bridge.  More on this shortly. Next week our program will feature Gary Pedigo on the Wonderful World of Graffiti.

President Angela presided and led us in the pledge. Loren offered an inspiration (Tebow?).

Secretary Robert introduced lots of guests including Angela's daughter and mother-in-law, two of Dana's children, our honorary member, Ed Moss (who entertained us with two jokes which required close attention), and Joyce Williams with Starfish one by one.

We sang Happy Birthday to Centennial Bob and General (three star) Lee.

Angela reminded us about the Family of Rotary event at her home on December 30 and that we have a table for the Foundation Dinner on January 13.  She also expressed her gratitude to George, featured in the Family of Rotary, and asked us to send him our thanks.  vetgws@aol.com   Rick reminded us of the wine stomp on February 10 and Roger (subbing for Don) reminded us of the Rotary Night at the Stock Show.

Rick  presented a slate of candidates to serve as officers next year.  Angela as past president, Rick as president, Brian Hall as president-elect, Robert as secretary and Marvin as  treasurer.  They were elected unanimously.

Centennial Bob asked us to give consideration to buying Centennial books as Christmas presents.  Special pricing.  $28 for the first one and $22 for additional ones.  Call him at 303-427-8132.

Mike took a poll of those who would like the Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions or the Rotary Code of Conduct.  He will email both and members can copy whichever they wish to frame and hang in their offices.

Garth informed us that we donated six computers to the Boulder club to support a program in Uganda and thanked those who attended the wonderful Arvada Chorale concert.

Angela presented our server, Stephanie, with a check and our thanks for her great service.

Bill substituted for JP as SatA.  A new record?

Mike's Rotary Moment informed the club on the history of singing at Rotary clubs, first started in the Rotary Club of Chicago in 1905.  A tradition that seems to be going out of style.

Joe T. offered two profound thoughts dealing with finances and corporate structures.  He was helped by Brian Hall.

Copies of the Bemis Award winning, Frameable, Winter edition of the  Early Word newsletter were on the tables and can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfm

We closed with a recitation of The Four Way Test.

Cheers,   Mike

If you missed the  meeting on December 14th,  you missed a most interesting presentation by Pat Tennyson, CEO, helped by Sarah Folzenlogen and Leandra Lipson, on the Butterfly Pavilion and its Living Lights show, December 10-23.  According to Angela the show is not to be missed.  Next week our speaker will be Ted Ning on Starfish One by One.

President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  Bob offered a prayer.  Secretary Robert introduced five guests and criticized Lee for not being around for his birthday recognition.
Bill and Angela then presented Ben Beaty, the recipient of this year’s Community Service Award, with a plaque and described Ben’s truly outstanding support of our community.

Angela announced that Ed Moss is looking for those interested in serving as a commissioner to assist the court in real estate issues.  Angela can provide more detail.
The Breckenridge Club is holding its annual chili cook-off this Saturday and all are invited.
Rick reminded us of the Wine Stomp on February 10, 2012, and apologized for previously giving us the wrong date.

Garth reported that we gave 13 computers to Hidden Lake kids and that he expects to hit 7,000 in February.  Plus he plugged the forthcoming performance by the Arvada Chorale.
Rick subbed, again, as SatA after some discussion as to whether Don could ever, again, carry the bucket.

Angela recognized Cliff as our Family of Rotary person and encouraged us to thank him for his great work supporting out club. Take a moment to write to Cliff at cbstratton@aol.com and thank him for his outstanding service. She also invited us to a Family of Rotary night at the Habben house on Friday night, December 30.  See a separate message for details.

Mike proclaimed The Rotary Moment and informed the club about new efforts to get publicity for Rotary.  Rotary International is budgeting $20 million for the effort.  Our district has received a PR grant, which has helped us get publicity on Colorado Public Radio.

Joe T. gave us not one but two profound thoughts.

Mark C. collected $61 for Pony Up for Polio.  Rick drew Emily’s ticket but she could not draw the winning card.  Doug then contributed $40 to get us over the top of our Polio goal of $7,000.  Many thanks, Doug.

Copies of the beautifully edited, Bemis Award winning, Frameable, Winter Edition of the  Early Word newsletter were bountifully displayed  on each table. This issue, and many others, can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfm

We closed with the Four Way Test.

Cheers, Mike

We closed with the Four Way Test.

...on November 30, 2011,  you missed a great presentation by Andrew Romanoff on the work of International Development Enterprises (IDE), an organization which is committed to helping poor people out of poverty, not through charity but by helping them start and operate businesses, particularly farming.  Next week we will hear from Chuck Hensel on a new version of the Neighborhood News.

President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  Herb provided an inspiration.  Rick subbed for Robert and introduced a number of guests.  We then sang Happy Birthday Motley Crew (to Dale, Dana, and Roger).

Angela and Mike then presented a PHF+1 pin to Kevin, recognizing his long time support of The Rotary Foundation.  We not only thanked Kevin for his support of the Foundation but also for his support of Have a Heart.  He collected today.

Many Announcements:

  • JP distributed a list of members' classifications and a list of suggested classifications that we can use to look for prospective members.  He urged us to identify possible members and either contact them directly or give their names to him or AngelaMike urged us to look for prospects in retailing.

JP had to beg for applause (shame on us) before conducting his extraction (or is it extortion?).

Mike delivered The Rotary Moment and identified three Rotarians who went on to become presidents of their country  (is Rotary good training for advancement?).

Roger thanked the many Rotarians who helped the Rangers provide 3,500 Thanksgiving meals and they shared many stories about the experience.

Lynn announced there will be a Communications Committee meeting next week.

Angela reminded us that Emil was featured for the Family of Rotary and asked us to email him our thanks for all he does for the club.  erinaldi@msn.com

Joe T. provided a profound thought.

Mark Clark collected $51 for Pony up for Polio.  Barbara's ticket was drawn but she could not draw a winning card.

Copies of the Award Winning Frameable, Fall Edition of the EarlyWord newsletters were on the tables.  To read all the news that's fit to print,  click on http://www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfm if you didn't get a copy.

We closed with a stirring rendition of the Four Way Test.

Cheers, Mike

...on November 23, 2011, you missed a meeting in which President Angela presided.  Marvin (featured in the EarlyWord newsletters' Family of Rotary column) led us in the pledge. Barbara's inspiration drew on George Washington's Thanksgiving proclamation.  Our esteemed Secretary, Robert, was absent as were the two birthday celebrants.  But we had two guests:  Nathan Hatcher and Susan Hall.

PROGRAM:

Mike Hayes made an excellent presentation about the history of microcredit, and described current programs which help people around the world to begin and grow their businesses. He believes microcredit has tremendous potential as one of the most powerful tools to address poverty in developing counties. His PowerPoint presentation was extremely well done.

Next week's program will feature Andrew Romanoff from International Development Enterprises.

FEATURES:

The first featured event of the morning was the presentation of the club's Vocational Service award to Brian Hall, recognizing his incredible service to the banking industry and the community.  In his acceptance comments he said he is guided by his former boss's (Bob Beauprez) words:  Just get it done.  Brian was nominated by Lori.

The second featured event was a presentation, by former member Nathan Hatcher, of a plaque and expression of thanks for the 7:10 Club's support of the Westminster Little League.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Bob reminded us that the Westminster Centennial book will make a great Christmas present.  It is now available for $27 and second copies are available for $22.  Call Bob at 303-427-8132 or the Publishing House at 303-428-9529.
  •  Garth announced that 63 computers were given to kids from Mapleton last Saturday.  We are now at 6,903 computers and Garth thinks we will hit 7,000 in February. The next distribution will be on December 3.  Garth also promoted a Christmas concert featuring the Arvada Chorale on Saturday, December 17.
  • Angela announced the Foundation Dinner, featuring RI president Kalyan Banerjee, on Friday, January 13, 2012.  It will be followed by a foundation seminar on January 14.
  • She also reminded us of the State of the State luncheon, featuring Governor Hickenlooper and Ron Burton, president-nominee of RI on December 9.
  •  Brian announced the club will be hosting a GSE team from Croatia, April 17-20.  We will need host families and arrangements for their visit.
  • He also reminded those who have signed up to be at the MAC either this afternoon or tomorrow morning for Thanksgiving help.
  • Roger announced an added feature for the Thanksgiving help days.  There will be the opportunity to Adopt a Family for Christmas for 150 families.  You can pick up food and then supplement it for Christmas.
  • Kevin reminded us that Have a Heart really needs clothes and other items and he can accept them on November 30.
  • He also announced that he and Kerri have agreed to host a Youth Exchange student from France from January to June.
  • Bill announced that this is the last week for nominations for the club's Community Service award.
  • Angela expressed her thanks to Marvin, our featured Family of Rotary member, for all his great work.  There was some confusion, however, about an 1894 Saab.

OTHER ITEMS:

Rick substituted for JP as SatA.  According to Rick, JP is recovering from a heart condition brought on by Oregon's loss to USC.  Rick managed to collect the big bucks by focusing on celebratory weeks, celebratory months, and featured birthdays.

The Rotary Moment, by Mike Hayes, recognized that Rotary is a great training experience for leadership and gave examples, including Luther Hodges of Chapel Hill, N.C., who became governor of North Carolina and U.S. secretary of commerce before becoming president of RI in 1967-68.

Joe T.  provided not one but two thoughts for the day.  One was profound

Mark W. collected $50 for Polio.  Susan drew Brian's ticket (was this rigged?) but he could not draw the winning card.

Copies of the Award Winning, Frameable, Fall Edition of the EarlyWord newsletter were properly fanned on each table and can be accessed on the club web site.

Angela wished us a Happy Thanksgiving and we closed with a recitation of the Four Way Test.

Cheers.  Mike

Today's Program:

You missed a great  opportunity to fill 40 shopping bags with goodies for 20 needy seniors to provide them with a Thanksgiving dinner.  According to George, we provided $1,000 of food plus over $300 in certificates. Many thanks, George.

Past president Lori presided. Martin, featured in the Family of Rotary, led us in the pledge. Loren provided an inspiration.  Copies of the Early Word were on the tables and can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfm

We applauded secretary Robert and sang Happy Birthday to Marching Mark Clark to recognize his trip to New York with the Legacy Marching Band that will march in the Macy's parade.

Prompted by Rick and Loren, Mike announced two meetings following the club meeting (Foundation Request Committee and the ad hoc committee on the club's foundation)

Bill announced we will make our Vocational Service Award next week and that nominations are now in order for our Community Service Award.

Bob said he had two announcements and then made three (or was it four).  This Friday Jefferson County will be celebrating its 150th Anniversary and will recognize George and Sarah Church.  The final Centennial Lectures will be this Saturday at the Westminster Presbyterian Church from 1:00 to 3:00.

Brian reminded us that Roger's Rangers need help on November 23rd from 12-4pm, and also on November 24th.  Call Brian by Friday if you can help.

Brian also reminded us of all the ways we can help Have a Heart.  The mission of Have a Heart is to provide food, clothing, school supplies and personal hygiene items to children of District 50 so they may achieve their academic potential.

Finally:

The Rotary Moment informed our members that the first Rotary presence in Colorado was occasioned by the chartering of the Rotary Club of Denver on December 11, 1911.  There will be a big party celebrating the event.

JP , as Sgt. At Arms, collected big bucks by fining anyone who made an announcement, thought of making an announcement, or should have made an announcement but didn't.

We closed the meeting with a stirring rendition of the Four Way Test.

Cheers,   Mike

…on Nov, 9th, you missed a very upbeat meeting.

PROGRAM:

A very informative talk about The Blunt Truth about Marijuana presented by Dr. Christian Thurston . He showed statistics    about how the explosion of medical marijuana licenses has affected young children in Colorado.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Guest Max Extine, representing Steve Donelson, asked 7:10 Rotarians to support the family fitness event that will benefit the Westminster Public Safety artwork project. For more information and tickets contact Mattg@mountainsidefitness.com.

Up With People is looking for host families to support over 100 young people coming to Denver. Contact Brian Hall for more details.

JP Moore announced the Flexible Membership plan that will allow a representative of a current member to attend a 7:10 Rotary meeting at no extra cost to the representative or member.

Dec.9th is the date set for the State of the State which will feature Rotary around the state.

George reminded members that he is looking for each member to donate $25 to support the Thanksgiving Basket project that will take place next week. There will be 20 baskets delivered to The Senior Hub that will support some deserving senior citizens.

Rick Fuller announced that Kevin was finishing his term on the District 50 School board and was applauded for his excellent service. Kevin then extolled the great work of Crutches for Africa and the Westminster Fire Department for the month long effort to collect crutches and other devices that will be shipped to Africa.

Brian Hall announced another service opportunity to work with Rogers’ Rangers to set up and distribute food for Thanksgiving Dinner. Interested Rotarians will gather on Wednesday, Nov.23rd, to set up, then on Thanksgiving Day at 11:00 am to distribute over 4,000 meals. Call Brian Hall for details.

Brian also extolled the virtues of the Breaking Down the Walls program held last week that helped high school students get to know one another better.

November is Vocational Service Awards month. Bill Walenczak announced that applications will be accepted from Rotarians who would like to nominate someone for that award.

Loren also announced the bimonthly Foundation Board meeting on Friday, Nov. 11th. This will be at the Legacy Ridge Grill at 7:00 am.

SGT AT ARMS:

Since JP Moore had to leave early to prosecute an innocent citizen, so he appointed an old hand to do the honors, Bill Walenczak. Bill then proceeded to award many Rotarians and guests for things like the “best dressed”, “the blue jeans award”, and fined the good 7:10 Rotarians for other incidental missteps. Speaking of extractions, Bill did a wonderful job.

C4K:

Loren meant to announce some C4K save the dates: This coming Saturday, Nov. 12th, at 9:00 am we are looking for Rotarians to help move monitors from storage to Garth’s office. Then on Friday, Nov.18th, members are gathering at 1 pm to clean keyboards and mice for the distribution on Saturday, Nov. 19th. On that Saturday we will be giving out about 100 computers to deserving student from a local school. We will be gathering at 8:30 am at Garth’s office directly West of Costco at 9176 Marshall Place, Westminster.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Joe T. had a very profound Thought for the Day.

PONY UP FOR POLIO:

Congratulations to John Inman for picking the winning ticket for the Pony Up For Polio prize. Mark Wilson filled in competently for Mark Clark who had another obligation.

EARLYWORD:

Of course, there was the Bemis Award winning, Frameable, Fall Edition of the EarlyWord newsletter placed strategically on each table for members to read. Fortunately, Loren the Editarian, was not fined for the many errors that were found in this publication. We certainly expect an error free issue next week. If you would like to find those errors go to our web site by clicking here.

WRAP UP:

President Angela asked if there were any further announcements (not that there were enough, already). Hearing none, she closed the meeting, asking the club to stand and recite the Four Way Test which was done with aplomb.

Cheers, Mike    /ld

...on October 19th, 2011,  you missed an inspirational talk by our District Governor, Jim Halderman. He asked us to strongly support the Family of Rotary, to continue to be an effective force for doing good in the world, and to make sure we change what needs to be changed. Jim sees Rotary as a catalyst that can have an influence way beyond its size and believes Rotary is truly "us." You can read some more about his passions in the Early Word, http://www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfmJim also reminded us of a number of forthcoming events; our State of the State luncheon on December 9, featuring Governor Hickenlooper, RI President-nominee Ron Burton, and General Secretary John Hewko; our Foundation Dinner on January 13th, featuring RI president Kalyan Banerjee; and the District Conference April 27-29 in Blackhawk: to be followed by the International Convention in Bangkok.  Next week our program will be on the use of Tasers for law enforcement.    President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  Bob offered a prayer.  Robert introduced our many guests including Jim's wife, Peggy, and Assistant Governor Dan Hershberger and Larry HoyMartin introduced Jessica Goette, who has been selected to be on the GSE team to Brazil, and prospective member Emily Wilson who gave us a brief report on the C4K distribution last Saturday. Bill reminded us that there are only 10 more days to submit a nomination for our Vocational Service Award.  Emil updated us on his progress on a Matching Grant to provide computers for a school in South Africa.  Angela then asked our District Governor to present a Paul Harris Fellow +3 pin to Mark W. to recognize his outstanding support of The Rotary Foundation.  Kevin reminded us to bring clothes for Have a Heart next Wednesday.  George informed us of the plans for Thanksgiving baskets for needy shut-ins and we agreed to ask each member to contribute $25 to support the purchases.  We will have the basket assembly on November 16th.  JP astounded us with some of the logic (or lack thereof) of his fines.  In the spirit of the Family of Rotary, Angela told us of the many  contributions Lynn Hoffman makes to our club and to the district. She suggested you send Lynn your thanks at lynnkarhoffman@earthlink.net. The Rotary Moment informed us that 217 Rotary clubs around the world have received Matching Grants for Microcredit in the last 10 years.  Clubs in our district got 12 of these (three of which were by the Westminster 7:10 club.)  Joe T. shared a profound thought.  Mark C. collected $52 for Polio.  Jim drew Mark W.'s ticket but he could not draw the winning card. We closed with a recitation of the Four Way Test.

Cheers,    Mike

...on October 12, 2011, you missed a most interesting presentation by Officer Trevor Materasso on "How Israel Addresses Threats of Terrorism" (based on his recent visit to Israel).  Next week our program will feature District Governor Jim Halderman.  You won't want to miss this.  His wife, Peggy, will be with him.  President Angela presided, led us in the pledge, and gave the inspiration.  Robert introduced five guests, including past member Eric HollowayGarth announced two distributions this Saturday.  One will be to kids from Ranum Middle Schools and one to kids from Westy.  He needs help at 8:30 and also needs cleaning help Friday afternoon at 1 p.m..  We should hit 7,000 computers in December or January.  Angela circulated a thank you note from Dan Hershberger for our hospitality a couple of weeks ago.  Doug distributed a list of target activities that were developed at our Visioning session last year. There are lots of goals and we need to start working on them.  Angela announced the District will hold a "State of the State" luncheon featuring Governor Hickenlooper on Friday, December 9th  at the Denver Tech Center.  Let her know if you would like to attend.  She reminded us that Brian Heil is featured in the Family of Rotary section of the Early Word and expressed the hope he would be with us next week. Please take a minute and write him an email that we missed him today.  She also announced that a scholarship fund for the daughters of Scott Perriman, who recently died, is being established by the noon club.  Call any noon club member for information.  JP was greeted with applause as he started his extraction.  (Why do we applaud this?) It doesn't seem to matter if your team won or lost. Mike confessed that he attended the induction of his oldest granddaughter into the Denver Cherry Creek club.  There are now three generations of his family in Rotary.  His Rotary Moment reminded us that this is Vocational Service month and encouraged members to display the "Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions" in their offices.  Let him know if you want to order a copy.  Joe T. contributed a profound thought.  Mark C. collected $65 for Polio.  Trevor drew Robert's ticket but Robert couldn't draw the winning card.  Tom bid us a fond farewell as he is off to Mexico for the next six months (unless his house there sells sooner).  Kevin reminded us to bring clothes for Have a Heart on the 26th.  Copies of the Early Word were graciously spread on each of the tables and can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/. We closed with the Four Way Test.

 Cheers,   Mike

...on October 5th, 2011, you missed a Club Assembly, which provided lots of information on what is going on in the club.  See the details below. Our next meeting will feature Officer Trevor Massero on how Israel fights terrorism. President Angela presided.  Mike led us in the pledge.  Barbara provided an inspiration. Robert introduced guests Beau Martin, Tony Spano, and Michael Bonfiglio (who updated us on Cub Pack 406 and thanked us for our support of scouting).  We sang Happy Birthday to Banker Brian.  Bill reminded us of the Wine Tasting for the Legacy Foundation this Friday, October 7, at the Westin.  Call him for tickets or more information. Bob informed us of   lots of coming events, including the Orchard Festival on Saturday, October 8th and a Hyland Recreation District celebration on October 13th.  Angela reminded us of the C4A collection and urged members to post the posters created by Loren in their businesses.  Our new SatA, JP complained about the use of the word extraction but then proceeded to extract.  Joe T. provided a Thought for the Day and Angela recognized Mike who was featured in the Family of Rotary segment of the Early Word, copies of which were on the tables and, of course, available on line at www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfm.

Here are the details of the Club Assembly as I heard them:

Administration by Board Member Doug.  He asked for ideas on greeters and advised us that Lee is responsible for programs for this quarter and that Bob would be responsible for programs from January to March.  He asked Joe about plans for the next Italian Lawn Bowling event, followed by lots of discussion. In addition, Joe reported the Wine Stomp is scheduled for November and Lynn reported on the success of the peach sale.

Membership by Board Member JP.  He informed us we have recently had 8 prospective members attend our meetings.  He, Herb and Tom plan to phone business people to invite them to visit (they have identified 34 prospects).  They also are contacting previous members to invite them to re-up.

Service by Board Member Brian.  He reviewed C4K, advised us of plans to support Roger's Rangers (next event is helping at Thanksgiving). He reminded us that George would again be doing Thanksgiving Baskets, confirmed Kevin was continuing Have a Heart collections, announced we are exploring hosting a Youth Exchange student, asked Martin to update us on GSE (Martin advised us that our candidate Jessica has been selected to go to Brazil next year).  In addition Brian reminded us that Rocky Mountain Elementary is looking for reading volunteers, John will be doing dictionaries, Mike is still working on Imagination Library (Mike needs help to identify prospective financial support), we still hope to have an Interact club at Westy, Oliver will be organizing a Four Way Test experience for ninth graders at Westy, and Doug has agreed to chair the scholarship committee.  WOW!!!!

Public Relations by Board Member Lynn.  Bill will again be working on club awards for Vocational Service (this month), Community Service in December and Ethics in January.  Loren will continue with the award winning Early Word, Mike will continue to submit press releases to the Window and Your Hub (let him know of stories you would like to see published).  Lynn hopes to have a presentation on using Face Book to publicize our club and is working to enhance our "brand."

The Rotary Foundation (TRF) by Roberta.  We are close to our goal for Polio and she urges us to continue our support of TRF.

The Club Foundation by Loren.  We have money and are spending it wisely, with the help of the Foundation Request Committee.

Martin raised the question about the action plans to support our Visioning session.  Doug is in charge of this and will shortly make a presentation.

All this and we were still able to close with a recitation of the Four Way Test.

Cheers,  Mike

...on September 28th, you missed a wonderful presentation by Dr. Jaime Yrastorza about Uplift International, an organization that for years has been providing surgical repairs to those in the Philippines suffering from cleft palates.  We also heard from Megs Lunn, a Rotarian from the Philippines who thanked Rotary for its support of the program.  (FYI, your club's foundation has committed $500 to a Matching Grant by the Wheat Ridge club to support an Uplift International clinic.  you are cordially invited to the Uplift International Gala this Saturday, 6:00 p.m. at the Denver West Marriott.  Call Dan Hershberger at 303-442-1575 for more information.)  President Angela presided and led us in the pledge (forgetting the tradition of delegating this responsibility to the person featured in the Family of Rotary).  Herb came back just in time to provide an inspiration.  Robert introduced guests John Kaufman, Karen Howe and our distinguished Assistant Governor Dan Hershberger.  Later Bruce Jones (from the Seattle 4 club) joined us and gave a brief update on his visits to Colorado.  (Bruce has been a wonderful supporter of C4K.)  Bill reminded us of the Legacy Foundation Wine Tasting Event at the Westin on October 7th.  Loren asked for help to move monitors this Saturday.  He needs eight and only got four.  HELP!!!  Angela asked for Volunteer Readers at Rocky Mountain Elementary.  Talk to Mark C. or call David Knapp, the principal.  She also updated us on the Crutches for Africa collection during October.  We need to publicize this. Kevin asked for Have a Heart donations and will collect again on October 26th.  Rick departed (a little) from his past use of history to perform his extraction.  Angela, belatedly, recognized Robert (the Family of Rotary kid) and thanked him for his contributions to the club. Mike's Rotary Moment informed the club about the use of first names in Rotary clubs and the practice in Asian clubs of creating nicknames (how would you like Muscles, Foghorn or Smiles?).  Joe T.  couldn't get his Blackberry to work so Robert used Android to provide a Thought for the Day.  Mark C. collected $57 and Lynn drew the winning card. Copies of the award winning Early Word were on the table or can be found on the club's website http://www.westminster710rotary.org/.  Note the article by Brian on tree planning for Westminster.  We closed with the Four Way Test.

Cheers.  Mike

...on September 21st.  you missed a most interesting presentation about The Global Warming Climate, a scientist's perspective by John Daniel (a NOAA Scientist with a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan).  Next week's program will feature Dan Hershberger on Uplift International.  President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  Loren offered an inspiration.  Secretary Robert introduced five guests. George led us in singing Happy Birthday to Big Kahuna Rick.  You can look it up on www.huna.org/html/kahuna. While the sentiment was real the singing left a lot to be desired.  Brian introduced a new club project.  In partnership with the Westminster Fire Department we will be collecting crutches, walkers, canes and wheelchairs for Dave Talbot's Crutches for Africa project.  Herb, Kevin and Mark C. volunteered to help.  Bob announced lots of opportunities for this coming Saturday by planting trees, attending a 2011 Westminster Lecture at the Westminster University (otherwise known as the Pillar of Fire) and a fundraiser for the Hyland Hills Foundation at Ciancio's.  Call Bob for information at 303-981-4141.  Mike advised the club that we have received a very nice letter from Friendship Bridge, thanking us for our contribution of $2,000 that will provide loan funds to at least six women in Guatemala to help them start small businesses. Martin introduced Jessica (his dental hygienist) who is a candidate for the GSE trip to Brazil next year and will be interviewed next Saturday.  Martin also offered a ticket to Sparkopolis, a library fundraiser and Robert took him up on the offer.  Angela reminded us that the Bemis award winning, frameable, Fall edition of the Early Word newsletter featured Lori Hanegan as an intrigal part of the Family of Rotary.  In the spirit of the Family of Rotary she encouraged us to tell Lori how much we appreciate her contributions to the 7:10 Rotary club.  Before conducting his SatA duties, Rick informed us that Water World just completed its best year ever.  He then went on to an extraction based on historical events that were, loosely, connected to members.  Mike's (yes, he is back) Rotary Moment informed the club that Rotary has an official flag.  Formally adopted at the RI Convention in Dallas in 1929 the flag consists of a white field with the official wheel emblem emblazoned in gold in the center of the field.  Joe offered a profound thought.  Mark C. collected $49, which will go to Polio as Joe T. could not pick the winning card.  Copies of the award winning Early Word were exquisitely placed  on each table.  In case you missed it, Kevin will be picking up for Have a Heart next week.  We closed with a reasonably good recitation of the Four Way Test.  (Could we do it if we couldn't read it from the banner?)

 Cheers.  Mike

..on Sept.14th, 2011, you and many of our club members, missed a very enlightening program by Mahala Evans, Library Director of Anythink Libraries, who introduced us to the libraries is the North Metro area that are much different from regular libraries. Anythink is promoting a fundraiser "Sparkopolis" that will provide support for a number of local Anythink Libraries in the area. It will be held at Anythink Wright Farms, 5877 E. 120th Ave., Thornton, CO, on Saturday, Sept.24th from 6-10 pm. Get your tickets at www.anythinklibraries.org.
President Angela opened the meeting right on time with a moving recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The anemic God Bless America needed a few more singers. Bob Briggs provided an inspirational and thankful invocation. Secretary Robert introduced the  Rotary birthday of Sparky Doug Hall, and forgot to introduce at least one guest. Herb updated the club about the Membership Team and the need for each of us to bring a guest to each meeting and announced there are three guests that will be coming to our meeting in the next two weeks. President Angela then asked for volunteers to host a student going to Westminster High School from the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Service Chair Brian Hall provided a thank you card received from Crown Pointe Academy for the donation and labor we provided for their Playground Build a few weeks ago. Brian also informed us about the Interact Fall Leadership Conference coming on Oct. 18th. There will also be a Four Way Test meeting at Garcias Restaurant in Denver on October 6th at 5 pm. Rotarian Oliver Grenham has again volunteered to head up our 4 Way Test Program. Check with Brian Hall for more details at bhall@valleybankand trust.com. Lynn again thanked the 7:10 Club for our help with the peach sale. We netted over $11,000 for our 7:10 Foundation that will provide funds for the  good works of the 7:10 Rotary Club. Rick Fuller, our prolific Sgt. at Arms, extracted a few bucks with a very academic session which asked members some very difficult question about Rotary and movie stars. We found out there are many star lookalikes attending our club meetings. Mark Wilson and all his "brothers", hosted the Pony Up For Polio drawing. Turns out the game was rigged because he picked his own number this week. Unfortunately it wasn't the winning pick. Better luck next time, Mark. Past President Loren came to the meeting unprepared and without  the weekly Rotary Moment due to the hours he had to spend on presenting the beautifully produced, award winning, frameable, and last, Summer edition of the EarlyWord newsletters that were fanned out  in prolific quantities on each table for each member to read. However, you can look forward to  next week for the new Fall edition of the EarlyWord which will grace the tables for your reading pleasure. President Angela coaxed a very weak recitation of the Four Way Test from all the attending members. One would think that after all the weeks and months we have been reciting this amazing document that we would have it memorized. Let's work on that. Angela then gracefully adjourned another well run meeting a few minutes early.

Cheers, Mike    /ld

... on September 7, 2011, and most of you did, you missed a very informative meeting regarding the current club budget. Because the scheduled speaker did not show up, President Angela deftly handled the extra time by reviewing the current club budget and the Leadership Plan. Bob Briggs moved that the club dues should be raised by $5.00 per quarter. Martin Postma seconded this motion and the attending club members cast an affirmative vote. This will add funds to the budget for Public Relations and Membership.
In other business, Loren announced there would be a choral concert to commemorate the 9/11 attach on the World Trade Center. It will be held at First United Methodist Church in Boulder at 2 pm. A full orchestra will accompany the 100-voice choir. It will be a spectacular event and is free. Tom presented a club banner from the Breckenridge Rotary Club. Roberta again announced the Safety Recognition Dinner tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. at the Westin Hotel. Please call her for free tickets. Garth told us of an upcoming distribution later this month. He has been in contact with Ranum Middle School, and will probably include about 100 students. More information to follow. Brian introduced another service opportunity. He would like to plan for Rotarians to help students at Rocky Mountain Elementary School practice their reading. This is a project we have done in the past. More information will be forthcoming. He also announced the fundraiser "Sparkopolis". This is an evening of food and entertainment at the Anythink Library in Thornton. The band "Fever" will be playing. Call Brian Hall for more information.
We were pleasantly surprised with a Peach fund raising update. The income was just about the same as last year, even though we split some profits with the Arvada Chorale and the Lightning Marching Band, we still did considerably well. Thanks to each of you who helped with this amazing project. Joe and Lori are looking for ideas to promote the Family of Rotary. There were a few suggestions such as Dinner Theatre, free events, even a progressive dinner. Please give your ideas to them so we can get to know our fellow Rotarians and spouses a little better. Bob Briggs announced the October Fest coming up on October 8th. The location is on 73rd between Lowell and Bradburn. There will be a parade and all kinds of fun. Our Sgt. At Arms, Rick, provided a major extraction. Practically every person in the room maxed out. Loren provided an extended history of New Generation as a Rotary Moment. Joe T. drew applause with his Thought For The Day. Well done, Joe.
Mark Clark hosted the Pony up for Polio drawing and drew Dale's number. However, Dale missed the cut. Polio wins! Of course, there was an array of beautifully produced, award winning, frameable, summer editions of the EarlyWord newsletter on every table. This delightful and informative edition can also be found at our website: www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfm. ...on August 31st,  you missed a most interesting presentation by our own Dana Wozniak about the Intriguing World of Investments.  Many thanks, Dana.  Next week's program will feature a presentation by Andrew Romanoff about the work of IDE (International Development Enterprises).  President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  (She was also featured in the Early Word section of the Family of Rotary.  You can look it up at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfm.Herb gave us an inspiration.  Secretary Robert introduced our guest, Darlene Buss, and reminded us that there will be a Foundation Board meeting on Friday, September 2nd .  The next club board meeting will be on Friday, September 9th. Kevin asked for Have a Heart contributions.  Mike took orders for Rotarian at Work tee shirts.  If you want one and didn't sign up, call Mike with your order by noon Friday. The cost is $13.95 plus shipping and they come in S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL and 4XL.  Lynn reported on peaches and thanked everyone for the great help.  Looks as if we will clear between nine and ten thousand dollars.  Angela expressed her thanks for Rick's work in getting a District Simplified Grant for C4K.  Garth reported getting 100 monitors from CROC's, the shoe company.  WOW!!!  Angela then explained the board's decision to ask the club to approve a dues increase of $5 per quarter.  We will vote on this at next week's meeting. JP outlined plans to seek additional members in the Westmoor and Orchard areas and asked members to keep the need for new members on the front burner, not just in August, which is membership month, but all year.  He also informed us of a plan to offer reduced dues for new members.  Mark W. subbed for Rick as SatA, and collected lots of bucks from those who know little about peaches.  Dana confessed that his son has just made the rank of Eagle Scout.  Mike's Rotary Moment informed the club that Strategic Partnerships, a significant element of the Rotary Foundation's Future Vision Plan, is a controversial issue.  He has expressed his concerns about this to higher ups.  Let him know if you want more information. Robert offered a profound thought.  Mark C. collected $48 for PUFP but Loren drew Angela's ticket and she picked the winning card.  Copies of the award winning Early Word were carefully placed on the tables.  We closed with a good rendition of the Four Way Test.

Cheers.  Mike

...on August 24th, you missed a comprehensive overview of the city’s Economic Development Office by Susan Grafton, Director of the office.  Doug is still waiting for confirmation for next week’s program.  President Angela presided and led us in the pledge.  Bob offered a prayer.  We sang America, but sure got off to a ragged start [until our vocal star, Garth, from the Arvada Chorale, put us back on the right track.ed].  Robert introduced our many guests including our president’s husband, Tim. Bob reminded us of the historical lecture tomorrow night at (the third) Westminster High School.  It starts at 7:00 p.m.  Garth told us he now has 192 computers all set and ready to go.  Loren presented a plaque to Emil, recognizing his service last year on the board. Brian introduced two of our Young RYLA students, Rebecca and Spencer, who were there with family members.  Again, what great kids.  JP reminded us that August is still Membership Month and urged us to bring guests to show off the club and what we do.  But, as he said, don’t limit this to just August.   Much information was presented about our peach sale.  According to Lynn we have sold 1,139 boxes.  Come to Carroll Butts Park, Osceola and 96th   at about 2 pm on Friday to set up tents and tables.   Bring a big side dish.  Wear your Rotary at Work tee shirt.  (Mike will take orders next week for tee shirts.  Make sure you let him know if you want one.)  Brian reported on some of the many ways we can help Roger's NAG (Neighborhood Action Group) work.  Rick’s extortion included a complaint about kids going back to school instead of coming to Water World.  There was no evidence that he fined himself.  The Rotary Moment informed members that Rotary commissioned a movie in 1955, The Great Adventure, starring Edward Arnold and Jim Bakkus.  Built around six Ambassadorial Scholars, the movie tells the story of Rotary’s founding, the Four Way Test, and what it means to be a Rotarian.  The movie can be purchased at shop.rotary.orgRobert offered a profound thought.  Mark C. collected $50 for Polio.  Tim drew Loren’s ticket (now twice in a row) but Loren could not draw the winning card.  Copies of the award winning Early Word were set precisely in fanned groups of three on the tablesand  can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/newsletter.cfm.  We closed with the Four Way Test.

...on August 17th, you missed a most interesting overview and introduction to "The World of Body Art," what's going on with tattoos, body piercings, etc., and how our attitudes are changing by our own Lynn Hoffman.  Immediate Past-President Loren presided, led us in the pledge and provided an inspiration.  Secretary Robert had "nothing to report." But we did have a guest:  Barb Donaldson.  Bob invited us to attend a Westminster Lecture Series event on Thursday, August 25th, focusing on Education in Westminster. The event includes tours of Westminster High School at 6:15 p.m. or 9:15 p.m. with the program starting at 7:00 p.m.  Bill reminded us of the Legacy Foundation Golf Tournament on Monday, August 23 (spaces are still available) and thanked the club's Foundation for its support of the Foundation.  Mike reported on a meeting of the Literacy Committee.  We hope to go forward with the Imagination Library but need financial support from other organizations.  Please give Mike your suggestions for organizations that might be interested in helping.  Before inflicting pain, Sgt. at Arms Rick reminded us of the peach pickup on August 26th.  We need tents and tables.  Let Lynn know if you can bring either.  Members who attend are asked to bring side dishes.  Rick then commenced his extortion, based on political orientation and a number of historical occasions.  Mike confessed to making a wonderful trip to La Veta, one of the best kept secrets in Colorado.  His Rotary Moment reminded the club of how programs started by one Rotary club can grow and have positive impact around the world.  One such event was Boys' Week, started by the New York City club in 1920 that grew throughout the world and morphed into Interact, Rotaract, and Youth Exchange.  Robert offered a profound thought.  Mark C. collected $58 for PUFP.  Rick drew Loren's ticket but Loren could not draw the winning card.  Brian Hall explained Roger's Rangers, an idea developed from our Visioning session.  The idea is to consider ways in which the club can help some of Roger's many community projects.  Copies of the Bemis award winning, Summer Edition, Early Word were profusely scattered on the tables, and can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org

We closed with a benevolent rendition of the Four Way Test.

We then sang Happy Birthday to Bow Wow George and to Your Majesty (guess).  Garth announced that his building is up for sale, which has some serious implications for C4K.  And he reminded us of tomorrow's concert at the Arvada Center.  Bob reminded us of the Car Show at the Front Range Airport on August 20 which also features Prostate Cancer Awareness.  Men can get a free PSA test.  Brian Hall then introduced our RYLArian, Sheridan Sutton.  What a great young person.  She hopes to get an Interact club started at Standley Lake High.  Lynn urged us to "sell peaches" and reminded us that we all now have a spreadsheet on which to record our sales and send them to Lynn.  He also asked the club if any members would like to buy ads in a Rotary page in the Westminster Window.  The response was not great but he hopes to keep working on the idea.  Angela, in the spirit of promoting the Family of Rotary, called our attention to the information on Mark Clark in the Early Word.  Mark informed us that he is going to run for re-election to the District 12 school board and invited us to the campaign kick-off party.  Angela told us we are invited to an "animal party" (whatever that is) in Golden and will provide more information.  She also invited members to join others at a 7:10 table at the dinner for the Westminster Public Safety awards on September 8.  Let Roberta or Angela know if you want to attend.  Herb asked for Rotarians to put in a good word to the County Commissioners to support the grant proposal that was turned in Monday for the art project at the City Hall.   Rick then conducted his extortion based on extensive research.  Mike's Rotary Moment asked if anyone knew what Rotary month it is but he was then commanded not to provide the answer.  He then reminded members that July was Rotary's Literacy month.  Let Mike know if you would like to join the Literacy Committee.  Robert offered a profound thought.  Mark C. collected $58 for Polio.  Logan drew Doug's ticket and Doug asked Sheridan to draw the winning card but she missed (just barely).  Brian Hall invited us to an Up With People rehearsal on August 6 at the Pinnacle Events Center.  The award winning Early Word was on the table or can be accessed at http://www.westminster710rotary.org/.  We closed with a stirring rendition of the Four Way Test.
